The European Commission has selected the Northern-Netherlands for a special collaboration within the field of Hydrogen innovation action

In January the European Commission announced that all regions of the European Hydrogen Valleys Partnership, with the Northern Netherlands as one of its leading regions, were selected for a new interregional collaboration. This collaboration was created with a special purpose: to limit the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

European Committee

The European Commission initiated this collaboration, which follows the work of an earlier 2017 EC initiative called ‘Interregional Innovation Projects’. This initiative was created to stimulate local regions to join forces with other European regions (both nationally and internationally) on the specific subjects of their smart specialization. Most specializations are not limited to country borders and with stimulating cross-regional partnerships across the union the EC wanted to accelerate specialized innovation within Europe.

Coronavirus

The ‘coronavirus’ collaboration for which, amongst others, the Northern Netherlands is selected, is a new version of the 2017 initiative. This collaboration focusses on limiting the consequences of the European coronavirus pandemic, by creating four focus areas:

  • Preventing and limiting COVID-19 cases;
  • Circular health care economy;
  • Digital and sustainable tourism;
  • Hydrogen Technology within carbon-intensive regions;

The Northern Netherlands will have a leading role within the last focus area.

Partnership

The collaboration consists of the merging of two hydrogen-partnerships. First there is the European Hydrogen Valleys Partnership, co-led by the Northern Netherlands region, which will merge with the Košice Region Partnership in Slovakia. Together they receive support from field experts within the European Commission as well as a financial support of 100.000 euro for external expertise  on upscaling and commercialization . The grant is distributed by the EFRO-fund.

The collaboration between the Partnerships and the European Commission will start  by the end of this month and the duration of this action will be one year.
